I’ve recently been in one of the busiest stretches of my business. Conferences, speaking events, travel… all of it stacked back-to-back.
And in the middle of all of that, I found myself reflecting on something really simple: the one thing I consistently choose to spend money on in my business.
For me, the biggest investment for brand photographers—at least the ones who want to grow—is continuing education.
Why Continuing Education Is My Biggest Business Investment
Since the very beginning of my business, I’ve always had the same thought: if I were still working a corporate job, my employer would be paying for me to learn.
They’d send me to conferences. They’d pay for courses. They’d invest in my growth.
So why wouldn’t I do that for myself?
Outside of paying a team and paying yourself, the most consistent investment for brand photographers (in my world, at least) is coaching, courses, and education. And that’s been true for me every single year I’ve been in business.
Most of the time, I’m in some kind of container—whether that’s a program, a membership, or a course. It’s just part of how I operate.
The Truth About “Optional” Investments
Here’s where I see a disconnect.
Even photographers who want to grow, scale, or pivot their business often treat education like it’s negotiable. Like it’s something they’ll get to “eventually.”
I just don’t agree with that.
Now, to be clear—this is not me telling you how to spend your money. If you’re in a season where basic needs come first, I get that. That’s not what I’m talking about.
I’m talking about the investments that make you pause a little. The ones that feel uncomfortable. The ones that make you think, “Am I really going to spend this much on myself?”
That’s the work.
If It Feels Uncomfortable, You’re Probably Doing It Right
Every single investment I’ve made—whether it was $27 or $10,000—has made me pause.
Not because it was wrong, but because it brought up all the questions:
Will I actually follow through?
Will this work?
Is this the right thing?
And what I’ve learned is this: there is no magic program.
But coaching and education build something way more valuable—trust in yourself.
Over time, I’ve developed so much confidence in my ability to follow through that I can now make bigger investments without spiraling. I know I’ll get what I need from them.
You Don’t Have to Use Everything to Get Results
This is something I see all the time, especially inside group programs.
People think they need to:
- Attend every call
- Watch every module
- Submit every assignment
You don’t.
Getting what you need from a program doesn’t mean doing everything. It means using the parts that actually support you right now.
Sometimes that’s showing up to calls.
Sometimes it’s asking questions.
Sometimes it’s just listening to the curriculum.
And sometimes? You don’t need most of it—yet.
That doesn’t mean the investment wasn’t worth it.
The Real Work Isn’t Just Skill—It’s Your Mind
Yes, your skills matter. Your client experience matters. All of that is important.
But the thing that will slow you down the most in your business?
Your thoughts.
“I can’t get motivated.”
“I don’t know what to do next.”
“No one is booking me.”
“I feel like an imposter.”
Those are the things that keep you stuck.
And in my experience, the best way to work through that isn’t on your own. It’s through coaching. It’s having someone help you see what you can’t see.
Because left to your own devices? You’ll avoid the uncomfortable work.
We all do.
Why Paid Containers Make a Difference
There’s a reason I continue to invest in paid programs, even when I have incredibly supportive friends and peers in my life who can also help me through business challenges.
Because sometimes a quick text or a 10-minute conversation isn’t enough.
Sometimes you need:
- Focused time
- Undivided attention
- Someone who knows your business and where you want to go
That’s what a paid container provides.
It creates space for real work—the kind that actually moves your business forward.
And no, AI tools or quick conversations can’t replace that. They just can’t.
Showing Up Like the CEO of Your Business
I don’t treat my business like a hobby.
I treat it like I’m the CEO.
Now, sometimes that looks like working from home with wet hair and a cup of coffee. It’s not always glamorous. But the mindset behind how I show up? That’s what matters.
And that mindset has been shaped—over and over again—by the education and coaching I’ve invested in.
If you feel like you’re spinning your wheels or can’t get past a certain point, it might not be a strategy problem.
It might be time to get support.
And if you’re needing something just like this to support you? That’s what we do inside Rebrand. Maybe you’re not sure what type of program you need. That’s just fine! But I’m here if you need the support!
Borrow Confidence From Your Future Self
If you’re already in a program and not using it… this is your nudge.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and stuck… this is also your nudge.
You don’t need to figure it all out on your own.
Instead, borrow confidence from the version of you who already has what you want.
The version of you five years from now.
The version of you running the business you dream about.
The version of you making confident, CEO-level decisions.
Ask yourself: how would she show up in this situation?
And then go do that.
Final Thoughts on the Best Investment for Brand Photographers
If you want to grow your business year after year, the biggest investment for brand photographers isn’t gear, or even marketing tactics.
It’s you.
It’s your growth.
It’s your mindset.
It’s your willingness to get in the room with people who challenge you.
That’s the work that compounds over time.
And it’s the reason I will always choose to invest in education.
