Reflecting on the year before planning for what’s next is one of the most important things you can do as a business owner. And yet, I almost talked myself out of doing it because I was making it bigger than it needed to be.
So instead, I sat down with a few notes to share a simple, honest 2025 photography year in review: a high-level reflection on what defined my year as a brand photographer, educator, and coach, what surprised me, and what I’m carrying into 2026. This episode isn’t data-driven or trend-heavy. It’s a real look back at what actually mattered.
Why Reflection Matters Before Planning for a New Year
Before you can set meaningful goals, you have to understand what worked, what didn’t, and what shifted. Reflection creates clarity, and clarity makes planning easier and more aligned. This 2025 brand photography year in review is about slowing down enough to notice the patterns, decisions, and priorities that shaped the year.
The Three Things That Defined My Brand Photography Business in 2025
When I look back on the year as a whole, three things stand out as the most defining.
The first was going all-in on education and coaching.
While education has been part of my business for several years, 2025 was the first year I intentionally booked fewer brand photography sessions so I could devote more time to Rebrand, Behind the Shot, and teaching. That decision didn’t come from wanting to step away from photography, but from recognizing where my passion and impact felt strongest.
Coaching and teaching allows for a ripple effect that extends far beyond one client at a time. When I teach photographers, they go on to serve their clients better, and that impact multiplies. This focus also gave me the space to refine my programs, move content where it made the most sense, and fill in gaps that needed attention.
Having that time allowed me to experiment in ways I hadn’t before, including running a test mastermind and hosting an in-person retreat. Those experiences will continue shaping what my business looks like moving forward.
The second defining factor of 2025 was profitability.
This is far less glamorous than other parts of business, but it was crucial. After a season of high spending in previous years, 2025 became the year I focused on profitability instead of just revenue. I didn’t necessarily make significantly more money than the year before, but I spent far less.
I became more intentional with my expenses, stopped impulse spending in my business, and worked to lower my monthly costs. That focus allowed me to rebuild savings, reduce stress, and feel more stable overall.
The third thing that defined my brand photography business this year was hiring more intentionally.
Instead of hiring quickly to solve problems, I slowed down. I spent more time identifying where I was truly the bottleneck in my business and where bringing in support would actually move things forward.
Hiring the right people for the right roles made a noticeable difference. The business ran smoother, I was able to focus on the work I do best, and growth felt more sustainable. Hiring well didn’t just save time; it created space for better decision-making and stronger results.
The Biggest Mindset Shift I’m Taking Into 2026
One of the biggest lessons from this 2025 photography year in review is the power of returning to the basics. That showed up in how I hire, how I spend money, how I plan my offers, and how I create content.
Instead of chasing trends or overcomplicating things, I focused on one simple question: how can I help? That mindset shift changed everything, especially my content.
What Worked Better Than Expected This Year
My content worked better than I expected in 2025. I stayed more consistent with the podcast than ever before, leaned heavily into solo episodes, and focused on topics that reflected real conversations happening in my world around branding, social media, and marketing.
Solo episodes felt easier than interviews, and consistency came from choosing sustainability over perfection. Returning to what I’m naturally good at made content creation simpler and more enjoyable.
What I’m Leaving Behind in 2025
One thing I’m intentionally leaving behind is overcommitting. This year taught me the value of white space and what I jokingly call the art of the dilly dally. Giving myself more time to think, rest, and exist without constant output led to better ideas, clearer decisions, and a healthier business.
Rest isn’t wasted time. And in 2026, I’m fully embracing that truth.
Looking Ahead to 2026 as a Brand Photographer
As I look ahead, 2026 feels exciting and full of possibility. I’m looking forward to refining what’s already working, deepening my programs, continuing to evolve my brand photography work, and building a business that supports both impact and life. If you’re heading into the new year feeling hopeful but cautious, you’re not alone. That’s exactly where I am too.
