Before I started shooting brand photography, I had a pretty idealistic picture in my mind of what it could look like. Creative freedom, incredible clients, and helping businesses market themselves with beautiful imagery. It sounded like the dream!
But nobody tells you that creating beautiful photos and running a profitable brand photography business are two completely different skills.
The camera is the part everyone obsesses over. We convince ourselves we need another lens, another camera body, or better equipment. But when it comes to building a profitable brand photography business and session, the photography itself is actually the smallest piece of the puzzle.
Why The Brand Shoot Is Only About 20% of the Job
This isn’t meant to scare you away from brand photography. It’s actually the conversation I wish someone would have had with me much sooner!
The session itself is probably the easiest part of the job. As long as you’ve planned well, showing up and photographing your client is the fun part. The real work happens before the shoot and after it’s over.
Planning strategic sessions that get your clients results—and delivering galleries with enough variety that they can actually use them in their marketing—takes intention. It doesn’t necessarily have to take a huge amount of time, but it does require a different way of thinking than portrait photography.
Your Clients Don’t Automatically Understand Brand Photography
If you’re coming from weddings or portraits, this can be a surprising shift.
Your clients don’t arrive already understanding the value of brand photography. You have to teach them what it is, why it matters, and how it supports their business. That education becomes part of your job!
The same is true when it comes to pricing. Brand photography isn’t priced by the hour the way many photographers are used to. If you continue pricing based on your time or your gear, you’ll likely undercharge for years.
Instead, pricing has to reflect the outcome you’re creating and the value your client receives—not simply the deliverables.
Your Delivery Process Is Part of Your Marketing
One of the biggest missed opportunities I see is what happens after the gallery is delivered.
You’re not just sending photos, but you’re actually creating marketing momentum.
The way you off-board a client directly impacts whether they refer you, rebook with you, or continue talking about your business. Too often photographers simply send a gallery link and move on.
It’s so much easier to continue serving someone who already trusts you than it is to constantly find brand-new clients. Building a thoughtful client experience after the session closes that gap and creates far more consistency in your business.
Your Portfolio Is Selling Before You Ever Do
Long before someone hops on an inquiry call, they’re looking through your work.
Your portfolio is already making decisions for potential clients. If you’re hoping to book a certain type of business owner or a certain style of session but none of that work exists in your portfolio, there’s a disconnect.
The good news is that you don’t have to spend months in a portfolio-building season. You can build your portfolio intentionally while getting paid for it. When you approach it strategically, you can create work that attracts exactly what you want to shoot next.
Beautiful Photos Alone Won’t Build Your Business
When I first started photographing brands, I was genuinely proud of the images I created. Some of those sessions are still on my website today.
But everything happening behind the scenes was held together with tape.
My pricing felt fuzzy. My delivery was slow. My backend systems weren’t great. My clients weren’t unhappy, but they also weren’t blown away. Referrals happened, but they were inconsistent and definitely not something I could count on.
Today, my photography business is almost entirely referral based. That didn’t happen because my photography suddenly became dramatically better. It happened because I built a repeatable process that carries clients from inquiry all the way through final gallery delivery.
The photographers building incredibly profitable brand sessions aren’t necessarily more talented or more creative. They simply have better systems.
A Profitable Brand Session Starts With the Entire Client Experience
It’s easy to assume success comes from taking prettier photos.
In reality, it comes from learning how to price, plan, educate, shoot, deliver, and build an experience your clients want to talk about. That’s what creates referrals and builds momentum. And that’s what turns a beautiful shoot into a business that consistently grows!
The good news is this isn’t a personality trait or some special talent you’re either born with or not. It’s a process you can learn.
